TomTom is collecting data from Uber to update its navigation maps. By being one of its trusted map editing partners, Uber is developing its ongoing partnership with TomTom, helping to establish more detailed navigation and location experiences, routing, fares, and estimates of arrival times. This will benefit customers, drivers, and delivery people on Uber’s platform.
The integration of TomTom data and Maps APIs by Uber will ensure a seamless mapping experience across more than 10,000 cities around the world for Uber users. TomTom processes approximately two billion map updates every month on a daily basis, which helps it preserve the newest maps.
Uber and TomTom will also work together to ensure that map updates represent changes in the real world, such as new routes, limits on turns, road closures, and more. Uber will observe and monitor on-the-ground observations from completed trips and deliveries; TomTom will use reports obtained from its partners to provide TomTom customers with even more detailed map details.
In return, Uber will get to integrate TomTom’s more accurate than ever maps, traffic data, and Maps APIs across its global platform to provide a seamless experience to users. This will be an extension of the existing partnership between TomTom and Uber that began in 2015.
“We look forward to working more closely with Uber and delivering even better location data to improve the mobility of the users of TomTom’s products everywhere,” said Anders Truelsen, managing director, TomTom Enterprise. “TomTom’s full suite of industry-leading datasets and services, including highly accurate maps, traffic, and Maps APIs, will help any company to enhance their location-enabled solutions.”
“Accurate mapping is at the heart of Uber’s platform, which is why we’re thrilled to continue teaming up with TomTom,” said Michael Weiss-Malik, director of product, maps and GSS at Uber. “Our partnership will help create even more dynamic mapping experiences in our global marketplace.”
TomTom regularly processes close to two billion map changes per month, and the MEP program is currently supporting an additional 3 million partner edits to the map every month in more than 70 countries.
